Counseling costs and insurance in Kentucky
Know what you’ll pay before your first session.
Cost is often the first question, and you deserve a clear answer. Acadia Counseling accepts 23 insurance plans across Kentucky Medicaid, Medicare, commercial, Marketplace, employee assistance and military coverage. Self-pay sessions range from $25 to $100. The plans you can use depend on which counselor you see, so this page shows both.

Our 15 licensed counselors take insurance in two groups. Every licensed counselor takes the core plans, marked All licensed counselors. Seven counselors also take the additional plans, marked 7 counselors. Those seven are Denise Hutchins, Nicole Davis, Eric Rudd, Charlene McDonald, Brittany Elkins, Michelle Benver and John Bush.

$25 sessions with supervised counselors
Deborah Marasa, Kelsey Hamilton and Sarah Smith are counselors in training. They see clients under the supervision of licensed counselors. Insurance doesn’t cover sessions with counselors in training, so their sessions are self-pay only, at $25. All three are taking new clients. Read more about affordable counseling.
Paying for sessions
We accept cash, checks and credit cards, including HSA and FSA cards. You can keep a card on file in the secure Client Portal and pay automatically. Charges are processed the day after each session.
If we’re in network with your plan, we bill your insurance directly. You’re responsible for your copay, coinsurance and any deductible.
If we’re out of network with your plan, you pay the session fee at the time of your visit. Ask us for a superbill, which you can send to your insurer for possible reimbursement.
Your right to a Good Faith Estimate
If you don’t have insurance, or you choose not to use it, you have the right to a Good Faith Estimate of what your counseling will cost. This comes from a federal law called the No Surprises Act. Ask for your estimate before your first session, and keep a copy.
If your bill comes out at least $400 more than your estimate, you can dispute it. Learn more at cms.gov/nosurprises or call 1-800-985-3059.
Questions to ask your insurer
Call the member services number on your insurance card and ask:
- Is my counselor in network for outpatient mental health care?
- Do I have a deductible, and how much of it have I met this year?
- What is my copay or coinsurance for a counseling session?
- Is there a limit on sessions per year?
- Do I need a referral or prior authorization?
- Are telehealth sessions covered the same way as office visits?
- Are couples or family sessions covered?
Write down the date of the call, the name of the person you spoke with and any reference number.
Questions about cost
Does Acadia take Medicare?
Yes. Seven counselors take Medicare and Medicare replacement and supplement plans. John Bush, Charlene McDonald and Brittany Elkins are taking new clients. Read about counseling with Medicare.
Can I use my EAP?
If your EAP is ESI, any licensed counselor can see you. Seven counselors also take Magellan, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna (Resources for Living) and Employee Family Resources EAPs. Check with your EAP about how many sessions it covers.
What if my plan isn’t on this list?
You can still see a counselor as a self-pay client and ask for a superbill to send to your insurer. Our $25 supervised sessions are another option. Call us before booking to talk it through.
Will my insurance cover couples counseling?
It depends on your plan. Some plans cover couples or family sessions and some don’t. Ask your insurer before you start.
