Good Faith Estimates (GFE)

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much therapy services will cost you.  Under the law, health care providers (including counselors) need to give patients who are not utilizing insurance coverage to pay for services an estimate of the bill they should expect.

You have the right to receive a GFE for the total expected cost of any services. Services are billed per session and those costs should have been covered and agreed upon verbally with your counselor prior to starting therapy.

Your counselor should provide a GFE in writing at least one business day before your first counseling session.  You can also ask your counselor for a GFE before you start services.

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your GFE, you can dispute the bill. Make sure you save a copy or a picture of your GFE. For questions or more information about your right to a GFE, visit http://www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call 1-800-985-3059.

The provisions of the No Surprises Act apply only to those paying out-of-pocket and not utilizing insurance or EAP benefits.  If you plan to use insurance or EAP benefits, you will not receive a Good Faith Estimate.
